The most important archaeological remains are in the village, including a hot spring and garum factory (a famous sauce made with fish and herbs). History enthusiasts will be glad to discover an interesting Roman site in Torre de Benagalbón. They were used to protect the coast from enemy invasions. Dating back to the 14th century, both are shaped like a conical trunk. Each one of them is positioned differently across from the other, representing the living, because in the centre of that gallery were the remains of those who had died.Īlong the coastline, you can observe the defensive buildings known as torres almenaras (beacon towers), including Torre del Cantal and Torre de Benagalbón. Around 13,000 years ago the silhouettes of several individuals were drawn in one of its galleries. The Cueva de la Victoria was a crowded funeral cavity dating from the Neolithic. It contains remains that are up to 30,000 years old from Archaic Paleolithic Art, Magdalenian Paleolithic Art to the Neolithic burials or Schematic Art that are barely 6,500 and 4,500 years-old. The Cueva de la Victoria is located only a few metres from the Cueva del Tesoro (Treasure Cave), and from an area of huge historical, cultural, heritage, scientific and tourism value. According to legend, the cave was chosen by an Almoravid emperor as a hiding place for treasure. As well as columns, gorges, stalactites and stalagmites, this amazing grotto features remnants of cave paintings. Its passages were formed below sea level from the impact of currents and waves over time. Rincón de la Victoria is home to the only sea grotto that can be visited in the whole of Europe: Cueva del Tesoro. A wall with two watchtowers, a central building and a covered well on the outside are the main parts of this squared-shaped complex. Nowadays it is used as an exhibition space. This fort was built from 1766 onwards to defend the area from pirate attacks. The Casa-Fuerte de Bezmiliana is the most emblematic monument in Rincón de la Victoria. In the shelter of this garrison, Bezmiliana Inn appeared, and the population gradually began to grow, until, on 17 February 1950, a Town Hall was built here. The few who remained settled around the old Benagalbon Farm (a name derived from the Arabic Bena Galb-un, meaning "the tribe of Galb-un"), thus founding the village of the same name, which was to be the most important population centre in the AREA until the late 19th century.ĭuring the reign of Charles III, the royal highway from Malaga to Velez was built, and alongside a fortress -known as Bezmiliana Fort House- to provide coastal defence against the possible attacks of English troops stationed in Gibraltar. The flight of the village"s morisco (Moslem converts to Christianity) inhabitants, their definitive expulsion in 1570, and the fear generated by the frequent attacks of Berber pirates left this coastal strip practically uninhabited in the 16th century. With the passing of the centuries, this fortress was also used by the Moslems and the AREA enjoyed times of great prosperity based on agriculture, tuna fishing and the sale of these products, which lasted until its capture by the Catholic Monarchs. On El Castillon hill in Rincon de la Victoria, the Romans built a fortress to protect the village of Bezmiliana. Also from this period are the remains of a Roman villa in Torre de Benagalbon. History The municipal AREA: the 4th-century geographer Rufo Festo Avieno described the AREA as the home of the temple to the goddess Noctiluca, or Moon Temple.
